Charles Village

Charles Village is usually the first area students check for apartments near Johns Hopkins University. It sits in the blocks surrounding Homewood Campus, with many apartments clustered along the main streets of Charles Village. Students can handle study breaks, groceries, and weekend plans without going far from campus. If you want the most campus-centred option for JHU housing, Charles Village is the most direct starting point.

Hampden

Hampden is a good choice for JHU students who want to stay near Homewood but live in a more local Baltimore neighbourhood. It sits west of campus, just past Wyman Park, and has a different feel from the student-heavy streets around Charles Village. Around Rotunda and West 40th Street, students can still find everyday services without going too far.

Tuscany-Canterbury

Tuscany-Canterbury is a quieter residential area just north of JHU Homewood Campus. It sits near North Charles Street, with nearby residential blocks around. So it feels calmer than Charles Village or Hampden. Students who want more greenery and space around them may prefer this area, especially if they spend long hours studying or working on campus.

Remington

Remington is another useful area for students comparing off campus housing near JHU Homewood Campus. It sits south of campus and has become more popular with students. R. House is one of the area’s main food and social spaces, and streets around Remington Avenue and West 29th Street give the neighborhood a more casual, lived-in feel. Remington is not as directly campus-centered as Charles Village, but it can work well for students who want a balance between JHU access and a more independent Baltimore routine.

Here is a simple breakdown for JHU students

Johns Hopkins University housing

• Johns Hopkins on campus housing: about $10,158 - $12,444 per academic year
  • JHU freshman housing: around $12,450 per year
  • Sophomore housing JHU: averages about $13,878 per year
• Johns Hopkins off campus housing: about $11,762 per year, while cheap rentals near Johns Hopkins University on uhomes.com start from $795/month

Dining & Food

• JHU meal plans: $8,182 - $8,552 per year
• Food for off campus students: around $3,600 - $3,800 per year, depending on how often students cook, buy groceries, or eat out

Books, Transportation & Personal Expenses

• Books and course materials: about $1,377 per year
• Transportation: about $738 per year
• Personal expenses: about $1,606 per year for phone bills, laundry, health items, clothing, entertainment, and other daily needs

• Walking: Walking is the easiest choice if you live close to Homewood JHU, especially around Charles Village, North Charles Street, St. Paul Street or East 33rd Street. Walking also keeps daily transportation costs low. The only thing worth checking is which side of campus you use most.
• Johns Hopkins shuttles: The Johns Hopkins Shuttle connects Homewood Campus with the Johns Hopkins Hospital area, mainly serving university students and faculty. This is most helpful for late library sessions, evening classes, or days when walking back feels less convenient. Before choosing Hopkins housing, check the nearest stop, service hours and how long it takes to walk from the stop to your building.
• MTA buses, Metro and Light RailLink: Baltimore public transit can help students reach Downtown Baltimore, Penn Station and other parts of the city. A single ride costs about $2, with day passes and monthly passes available for students who travel more often. It can work well if you live in apartments for JHU students that are a little farther from Homewood.
• Charm City Circulator: Charm City Circulator is a free transit option in Baltimore. The Purple Route reaches the 33rd Street area. It can help students travel between North Baltimore and central Baltimore without paying a fare.
• Biking: Biking can be practical for students living in Charles Village, Hampden, or Remington. This option depends a lot on the apartment and the route. It is often faster than waiting for a bus on shorter routes, especially if your apartment has bike storage.
• Driving and parking: Driving is not necessary for many students living in apartments near Hopkins. Parking is usually the part to check carefully. Some apartments include parking, some charge an extra monthly fee, and some depend on street parking. So it is worth checking parking cost and availability before booking apartments for rent near Johns Hopkins.

• Student organizations: Johns Hopkins has 500+ student-run organizations, so campus life is not limited to academics. Some students join pre-professional or academic clubs. Others spend time in cultural groups, service programs, student media, arts organizations, student government, or leadership groups. At a school with a heavy workload, these groups can make the campus feel a little smaller.
• Dining and food: Charles Village and North Charles Street add cafes and quick food options close to campus. For more local food choices, students often look toward Hampden and The Avenue.
• Recreation and fitness: The Ralph S. O’Connor Center for Recreation and Well-Being is one of the main places students go for workouts. Wyman Park and nearby green spaces also give students a break from indoor study time.
• Arts, museums, and culture: The Baltimore Museum of Art sits next to Homewood Campus. It is one of the easiest cultural spots for JHU students to visit without planning a full trip downtown. Students can also explore galleries, live music, and cultural events across Baltimore.
• Blue Jays traditions: Athletics are one of the most recognizable parts of Johns Hopkins student life. The men's lacrosse program started in 1883, with 44 national championships and 9 NCAA Division I titles. Home games are played at Homewood Field, an 8,500-seat stadium on the Homewood Campus. For students living near JHU, those games are one of the clearest moments when school spirit becomes easier to see.
